Understanding OFA vs. SV Hip & Elbow Evaluations
We utilize modern health testing standards, including evaluations through organizations such as the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) in the United States, while also recognizing the grading system used by the SV (Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde) (SV) in Germany.
Both systems evaluate hips and elbows, but they use different grading scales and interpretation methods.
For hips, OFA assigns ratings such as Excellent, Good, Fair, or Dysplastic, while the SV uses a classification system such as a-normal, fast normal, and noch zugelassen. For elbows, OFA classifies dogs as Normal or assigns grades based on degenerative joint disease, while the SV uses a numerical grading system.
Because of these differences, a dog may receive slightly different evaluations depending on which system is used. This does not necessarily indicate a difference in the dog’s actual soundness, but rather reflects how each organization interprets radiographic findings.
At Pikes Peak German Shepherds, we prioritize the overall health, functionality, and real-world soundness of our dogs—not just a single score on paper.
